How Does Laser Hair Removal Differ From IPL?

September 22, 2026

Laser hair removal and IPL both use light-based energy to reduce hair growth, but they do not deliver that energy in the same way. Laser hair removal services use a specific, concentrated wavelength selected to target melanin in the hair follicle. IPL uses a flash lamp that emits a broad spectrum of wavelengths. Although IPL systems use cut-off filters to select a particular range of wavelengths, the resulting light is still broader and less selective than the energy produced by a true laser. This difference affects how precisely energy can be directed toward the hair follicle, which skin and hair combinations can be treated, and how treatment settings are selected.

At IGBeauty, we use professional laser hair removal machines, rather than IPL, for our laser hair removal treatments on the face and body. Our laser clinic has been treating clients in midtown Toronto since 2010, and one of the most common questions we get, whether for a first-time Brazilian laser hair removal appointment or any other area, is why laser tends to outperform IPL for hair removal specifically.

Here's what actually separates laser hair removal services from intense pulsed light (IPL).

Precision and Targeting

During laser hair removal in Toronto, a laser machine produces a concentrated beam of light at a specific wavelength. That wavelength is selected based on how deeply the energy needs to penetrate and how it interacts with melanin in the hair and skin.

IPL does not produce one specific wavelength. Its flash lamp emits a broad spectrum of light, and cut-off filters are used to select the range delivered to the skin. Even after filtration, the light remains broader and less concentrated than true laser energy.

Because IPL light is less selective, some of its energy can be absorbed by other chromophores, or light-absorbing targets, within the skin. Increasing the IPL setting can therefore increase unwanted skin heating and the risk of burns. This limits how much effective energy can safely be directed toward the follicle.

For hair reduction, the more focused delivery offered by a true laser hair removal machine generally allows effective energy to reach the follicle with greater precision. While IPL can be useful for some cosmetic applications, its versatility does not make it as selective as laser hair removal.

Our guide to how laser hair removal works explains how laser energy targets follicles during their active growth stage.

Which Skin and Hair Types Each Suits

Different laser wavelengths interact with the skin and hair in different ways. At IGBeauty, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, which combines a 755 nm Alexandrite laser with a 1064 nm Nd laser. We also use the Lumenis LightSheer Duet, an 810 nm diode laser. These are true laser hair removal machines, not IPL devices.

Having more than one wavelength available allows us to select technology based on your individual requirements, rather than relying on the same light range for every client. Alexandrite technology is commonly used for suitable clients with lighter skin tones and dark hair. The Nd wavelength penetrates more deeply and interacts less strongly with melanin at the skin's surface, making it a suitable option for many darker skin tones. Diode technology provides another professional option for treating a variety of areas and candidates.

Session Consistency

Laser hair removal machines' more targeted energy delivery tends to produce more consistent results session to session, which is part of why clinical laser treatments are generally associated with a clearer path toward long-term hair reduction than IPL. IPL devices, including many consumer or spa-grade options, can vary more in output and results from one session to the next. That variability can make it harder to predict how many sessions a course of IPL treatment will actually take compared with a laser protocol built around a known wavelength and setting.

Comfort and Safety Considerations

Because laser wavelengths can be selected for a specific skin and hair combination, a qualified provider can adjust settings to help manage comfort and reduce the risk of side effects like burns or pigmentation changes. IPL's broader spectrum offers less of that fine-tuned control. A consultation is the standard way our clinic determines which wavelength and settings are appropriate for a given client, rather than applying the same settings across every skin tone and hair type.

If you're trying to decide between laser hair removal and IPL for your own skin and hair type, that's exactly the kind of thing a consultation at our midtown Toronto clinic can help you sort out, rather than guessing based on what worked for someone else. Bringing questions about your skin tone, hair colour, and treatment goals to that first visit is the most direct way to find out which approach fits your situation.
