The Most Common Cold Weather Beauty Disasters

January 11, 2016

When the mercury dips below the freezing mark (combined with blistering winds and heavy snowfalls), winter weather can really take a toll on your beauty. The cold days seem endless and regardless of how many layers you wear to stay warm, you need a regimen to combat the damaging effects of the dropping temperatures and frigid conditions. So that you’re prepared to brave the cold, here are some of the most common cold weather beauty disasters to avoid.

The winter weather will wreak havoc on your skin – and in more ways than you think! The most common problem that is faced during the winter is dry, flaky skin. As temperatures dip, the air becomes cold and dry, resulting in less humidity in the atmosphere, and in your skin! Applying lots of moisturizers can help combat dry, flaky and often times itchy winter skin, however there is more that can be done.

It comes as a surprise to many that the most common of the cold weather beauty disasters take place while you are in the shower. The soap you use during the spring and summer climates may over-dry your skin in the winter, and should be replaced with a moisturizing cleanser that protects your skin. It’s also common (and tempting) to take long, steamy hot showers (especially when it’s below freezing outside), but the heat from the shower can also contribute to the over-drying of your skin, as it removes the lipid barrier that your skin needs to hold in moisture. It’s recommended to limit the length and heat of your showers and to use cleansers and moisturizers that offer long-lasting relief from dryness.

As your skin gets dry from the lack of humidity in the air and the frigid outdoor temperatures, winter is the common culprit for dry, chapped lips as well. To make matters worse, you may attempt to provide temporary relief by licking your chapped lips, but this actually makes matters a lot worse. The best way to protect your lips is with a moisturizing balm that can penetrate and lock in moisture. Stay away from waxy or heavily scented lip balms (especially if you have sensitive skin). Another key tip is to cover the area with a warm scarf (as scarves are great for keeping harsh winds at bay). Drinking lots of water and staying hydrated will also help as this keeps your body hydrated and the moisture in.

It’s not just your skin that suffers from the damaging effects of cold winter weather. Your hair loses a lot of hydration as well. There’s no surprise that you should be covering your head with a hat (even if it’s not the most stylish thing to do), and you can switch to a moisturizing conditioner and hair serums to keep your ends from drying out.

Don’t let the long, cold winter weather discourage you from looking your best. Just because you’re covered up for most of the season, it doesn’t mean you should let go of your beauty regimens. It’s easy to lose motivation when the summer glow is gone, however it’s more important than ever to keep your skin protected during the cold months.
